The story of ESG begins back in the early 70's when a young family of sisters (Renee, Valerie, Marie and Deborah Scroggins) were growing up in the crime riddled Bronx area. Recently however their story has a new chapter, as one of the world’s most sampled and yet amazingly, little known bands returns with their first artist album in 5 years entitled ‘Keep on Moving’.
Growing up in an area where drugs, gangs & street violence was prevalent their Mum strongly encouraged their interest in music as a time old way of keeping them off the streets and on the right path, buying them instruments and even naming the band (taking their name from their birthstones – Emerald, Sapphire and Gold).
Their track "UFO" is one of the most sampled tracks in the history of hip-hop and has been used by artists such as Public Enemy & Big Daddy Kane. This position (for which they remained largely unpaid due to the structure of music licensing laws) led them to record "Sample Credits Don’t Pay Our Bills" in the early 1980s. Nearly 20 years on ESG still manage to span the divides between hip hop, dance music, punk and new wave whilst still injecting new flavor and heavily influencing the course of the music in these genres.
Their current line-up features original members: Renee, Valerie & Marie Scroggins, over the years they’ve added Renee’s daughter, Nicole & Valerie’s daughter Chistelle ensuring the group remains a truely family affair. They’ve played world renowned venues such as Manchester’s legendary Hacienda right through to Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage and to this day still continue to tour.
The new album according to ESG cult fans is “very good, but quite short” and see’s the same type of punk/ funk booty shaking dose which has proved them extremely popular worldwide.
