Wow! This place is kicking off again.. and new contributors too!

As some of you know, I am now living in the crazy sand-pit that is Dubai, where we've been graced by the likes of Elton John, Celine Dion, Santana, Shakira (which was a massive sell-out show), Tatu (all the things you said all the things you said running through my head) and next week Mariah Carey is playing in Dubai and the week after Bon Jovi is playing at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

I feel so musically challenged.

Thinking that maybe a good club night would sort that out.. having a quick scan through the weekly TimeOut guide, sift past all the MoS style club nights.. RnB Superclub stuff.. Rock cover bands.. Retro nights (VERY popular here.. think Bristol Arms steez).. you get DJs like Tiesto, Roger Sanchez, Mauro Picotto, Sharam, Armand Van Helden, Pete Tong, Morillo etc etc. I made sure I went along to check out Digweed when he was here in Feburary and it was just a massive let down. WAY too ploddy for ghetto club tainted cochleas (is that the right part of the inner ear??). Since then we've had Danny Howells, Hernan Cattaneo and Dirty South (I wasnt in attendance to rep for Aus).. not that I'm out to diss any of these acts, its just not my thang at the moment.

Then theres the Grooverider kerfuffle would be right to turn any touring DJ off..

And to add to my predicament, internet access to certain sites can be limited due to blocks and government censorship and bans.

Whats a girl to do?!

I am relying a lot on what other people tell/send me and the bits and pieces I get a chance to read about. When I went back to Sydney about a month ago, the sound of new music was just incredible! With non-censored internet access, I was once again scouring through blogs and music sites trying to find out what all the kids are listening to these days.

Then on Facebook, I noticed Euan, our friendly MajorLeaguer, had posted a link to a site called mUxtape (and to use his joke "No, I'm not a Kiwi"). You basically upload 12 mp3s (each no bigger than 10mb) and have all your friends listen to it. Its a pretty neat idea. One that I'd spent most of the afternoon mucking about with after grabbing a stash of new things.

Fo' shizzle this is the real deal. A co-worker brought this Nick Jnr show to my attention yesterday and it's become an immediate favourite. Clearly aimed at kids up early & clubbers just getting home from a night on the tiles its got the freshest graphics and a music team that clearly has their ear to the ground.

Biz Markie even has a "beat of the day" section where he teaches kids how to beatbox.

The Hump Day Project are two boys (Steve Lind & One Man Army) with big dreamz of a better life where the only skins they be beating would be attached to a drum kit.

Rumour has it Steve's momma hustled keys on the side as a piano teacher just to put food on the table for her family. Details regarding One Man Army are only just beginning to emerge but are hazy at best.

Love from the blogosphere has come fast & furious in a few short months with scattermish, trashbags and Palms Out Sounds all coming on board. From there the word has spread on these two hustlers as they've rolled their way onto playlists by Tittsworth, Kid Kenobi and Martelo (Santogold's tour DJ & one to watch) as well as their first broadcast airing by Utah Saints on Annie Mac's radio 1 show.

My opinion about the Fiddy 'Curtis' vs Kanyeezy 'Graduation' thing.. I'd have to admit that I'm preferring the 50 album at this point. More so for its beats and the collabs.. but I like Kanye's voice better. I was expecting more boomtown things with 'Graduation', but it wasnt as bigger let down as 'Late Registration'. More laid back.. so I can see it being used more as a "atmosphere/background" thing.

Dayna seems to be right when she said the other week I had a few more posts in me when I had preemtively decided to retire from iUTDWD?

For those that know about Urban Outfitters .. like, one of the coolest shops ever that I got introduced to in London (a shout out to the Covent Garden and Oxford Circus stores!). I get their weekly mailouts so I can pout about all the stuff that I can't buy because they don't do international shipping.. and last night they sent one out about an interactive feature that they are doing on Modular. I came into work this morning and clicked the link and then walked off for a meeting and hearing the likes of NYPC and Muscles on the office stereo and thinking "wow, I'm suprised the new guy is playing this sort of music!" not realising that the wesbite had streaming.

But my ears pricked up when I caught wind that Scottie B (the OG of Bmore Club) is playing in Sydney this week, so I thought I'd have a dig around.

Has peoples done their ITM50 votes yet?

I haven't actually looked at how this works.. as in how the selections/nominations get there, but you'd think they might take the time to update things? Looking through the lists, there are a lot of local DJs that don't really play out anymore? Or do they still count if they've played somewhere at least once in the past year? And the thing I am most appalled at is the international DJs list.. it looks exactly like the list that RA put together when the site first started (like 2001?) Like, what has Parks + Wilson done since 2004? And whos Barry Gilbey? And no sign of anything RoShamBo on any of the lists. Should I even be suprised that they dont have Diplo or A-Trak anywhere near that list?

Thats not jibberish.. its actually the Welsh word for homosexual. I wouldnt even know where to start to even try and pronounce it.

My musical tastes have been in a somewhat state of disarray.. with not having easily accessible internet outside of the work (which has turned out to be a good thing, I feel!), listening to the timewarp that is my iPod, having the office radio tuned to WSFM (Good Times, Great Classics) and an assortment of Best Of.. albums that are being played off other people's computers (Fleetwood Mac seems to be the popular one recently).

All this kinda led me to seek out old RnB. Yeah, it makes total sense. I got some Praz + ODB with Ghetto Superstar and Biggie with Mo Money Mo Problems. Kit reminded me about some Toni Braxton and 96.1 gave me some Usher.

I was listening to Shantan on his FBi show the other night and he played this Kayeezy track. I'm a bit mixed about this track. The OG track was kinda good for a while.. then too many people were loving it and it got hammered. I think you just need to take a break from it for a little while. Like the reason why I like listening to WSFM.. things really do work in 20 year cycles.

Kanye - Young Folks

On further research, I find out its a sample from a mixtape he released called Can't Tell Me Nothing, which is also the name of the leadup single to his new album. It has the usual guests like Common and Talib, but also Kid Sister (from his A-Trak connections?), Sa-Ra and Lil Wayne and others. Maybe you've heard 'Stronger' already.. which is just him rapping over Daft Punk's 'Harder Better Faster Stronger', which I feel is kinda crap. If you look, you'll find the remix by Diplo which is probably better because there's no Kanye giving himself a gee-up.

New Listening Tunes

So three of my most highly anticipated albums of this year (so far) has been released.

The A-Trak Obey Mixtape is outstanding. The combination of hiphop, electro, ghetto, club and indie never sounded so good.

I found the FabricLive 33 by Spank Rock a bit confusing. I was expecting much more.. like their show that I saw at the Metro at the begining of the year. Instead it appeared to be a mish-mash of the best-of electro tracks of the year(s) gone by with some old school funk thrown in for good measure. With a couple more listens, it seemed to sit well within the work crew without offending too many people. XXXchange explains why its had to be:

"...the licensing is a huge process that has a big influence on how the mix ends up. with Fabric it worked like this:

first you make a wish list of stuff, then they try and license all that stuff. about half of the requests will get turned down and another quarter will come with specific instructions (more on this later). so, if you've tried to make any kind of coherent statement with the tracks you've picked on the first round you're gonna need to compensate for all the holes on the second round of wish-listing.

to avoid unnecessary arguments and confusion I took over nearly the entire selection / licensing process on our side of things. that's probably why this mix ended up being a more electro stuff /obvious hits and less rap / obscure rock stuff than our previous mixes, just 'cause that's the way my taste runs.

some of the stuff that got turned down was really suprising, we tried to get two seperate tracks by MU but apparently they deny everything on general principal. "cola bottle baby" got turned down and all kinds of other obscure shit got turned down...people who you'd figure would be clamoring over each other to get that licensing money...! justin timberlake of course got turned down but, rick ross got approved. go figure...

"owner of a lonely heart" got approved. but we weren't allowed to re-edit it in any way so, i had to hire Tyler Pope to come in and re-play the guitar parts for that and the justin timberlake song. we also had to make a fake version of MU's "Paris Hilton" which happens underneath the "technologic" acapella. in the end, the easiest companies to work with were the smaller, more dance oriented ones like, ed rec, institubes and, gigolo, who are actually familiar with the Fabric mix cd series.

this one is way more stretched out than the rest of our mixes, in terms of letting each track actually play for a while etc...

fabric requires you to fill 70 minutes with only about 25 tracks licensed, which means each track has to play for about 2 and a half minutes. this format, I feel, is a little bit outdated and is probably better suited to doing a compliation cd rather than a mix cd. However, since it's impossible for fabric (or scion, or whoever) to make any money off these cd's if there's more than 25 tracks lisenced, we're all stuck trying to fill that space with that amount of songs. so it's nice to pick 12"s that have the acapellas and bonus beats and all that other good shit to play around with...

so, while finishing the mix, I forgot about the 70 minute length requirement ( the other dudes were on tour by this time) and, I turned in a 54 minute one. so, they made me go back and re-do it but, were nice enough to license a few more tracks (over their normal limit) to help me fill it out. in the end we figured out how to make it work but left the experience ready to do another "fun" ( apparently now also illegal) mixtape as soon as possible"

That that pretty much explained it for me. With a couple more listens, I'm finding some new twists within the mix and its actually pretty special.

I've been waiting almost forever for this one! The only one I dont think I've heard being played on EVR or anywhere is the Kasabian one (and the interludes). I notice that 96.1 played "Ooh Wee" last night and Nova 96.9 has added "Stop Me.." into their playlist. Is it about to get hype for a tour?!

Easter Sunday.. I holidayed at my parent's house last night.. I'm waiting on my first load (out of 3) of washing to roll. My phone died yesterday, so I'm pretty much incommunicado. I'm bangin'.

I was reminded by Radge recently about BlaqStarr. He's released an EP through Mad Decent (and you can hear samples on Turntable Lab) and if you're subscribed to Mad Decent Radio podcast, you would've received the #14 (its streamed through that page) Blaqstarr mixtape in your iTunes, like, ages ago. The first ever V Festival in Sydney is on tomorrow at Centennial Park and I'm pretty excited about a nice day out in the field (or so the BoM tells me), I'll still pack the poncho though!

Seems like the hype-world has gone mega blogtatstic for Amy Winehouse.

Could it be from her win for Best Female British Artist at the recent Brit Awards? The publicity at the after-parties with suspicious white powder lodged in her nostrils? Her stint in rehab? The mass amount of tattoos she has that she got to alleviate boredom? The smokey club jazz singer voice that leads you to disbelieve that she only 25 and white jewish? Her connection with Mark Ronson?

She was one of my first blogs on here, like, ages ago. So I guess I'm just really down with it. Naa'meen?

But I'm going to take you back to her first album, Frank. It was released in 2003 just after I had arrived in ye olde London towne. Back then when tech, prog and dnb were pretty big to me, this jazz stuff was pretty nanna-ish. We used to cringe when the bars of 'Stronger Than Me' would come through when the ad played on TV. My boss at my last job in LDN loved the album. She was in her 40s, single, jewish background, a director in the company, posh and everyone used to be scared of her. Fits the audience bill, no? I don't know how I dealt with her for 8 months.. shows my strength of character maybe. But I digress... long story short is that I basically ripped as much music of anyone and everyone before I went travelling around Europe so I wouldn't go mental.

Its pretty surprising to now see that the 4 or so songs that she released off Frank, none of them charted higher than #57 ('Take The Box'). With the popularity of Back to Black, Frank has re-entered the charts.

Amy Winehouse - In My Bed

'In My Bed' charted at #60 and was produced with Salaam Remi (who also worked on Back To Black). It uses the same beat as Nas' 'Made You Look'... probably because Salaam Remi worked in his 2002 album, God's Son.

Saturday (V Fest Afterparty?) for Zooky at Havana where MH will be doing his own DJ set along with GB/GG.

One more thing about Miami Horror.. look out for tunes by TIGRTRON, which is the international collab between MH and Curtis Vodka!

In other news.. A-Trak has the recent mixtape collaboration with Obey called 'Dirty South Dance' which was released in conjunction with the recent SXSW tour.

"It’s somewhere between blends and remixes. It’s more produced than a blend, but I’m always starting with someone else’s song so wouldn’t call it a remix fully. Taking electronic, dance, electro that’s got a good beat. Matching up-tempo good dance beats, with southern half time acapellas. Producing a bit and adding other elements in to it, getting it more structured. I made 15 of those and I’m making a whole mix of it. And that’s a lot of the stuff that I play in DJ mixes. With the graphic designed by Obey artist, Shepard Fairey, there was a poster + CD package, which have already sold out on the Obey site been seen on ebay and t-shirts too!

I can't see anything about a tracklist, but its due in Sydney any minute and I'm getting my copy put on hold over at Jimmy Sing's. Owning hard copy CDs again.. could be the year, especially with 'Versions' and SpankRock's FabricLive being released on the same day next month!

Walking to work today I noticed that the cafe's had the 'Hot Soup' signs out amongst the onset of the winter morning chill.Huzzah - I love soup in winter, but it was a definite sign that summer has in fact done an Elvis and left the building.

Jumping topics... the 'problem' with friends with similiar music tastes that you share blog sites with is that whilst you love them dearly, it sucks majorly when they beat you to the post.

Such was the case for KissySellOut. My own fault, I lagged on the post and he (she) who sleeps... weeps. In fact I'm crying like a baby right now.

However Mishmillionaire was on the money (*boom tish*), and you can mark her dollar billz - KissySellOut is shit hot right now. 'The Does It Offend You, Yeah?' remix I was gonna post is actually on his podcast page so jump over to there to download it pronto. And be sure to check out his label website for the goods too.

So last time I got around to blogging I mentioned I'd be putting up some old school Debbie Deb stuff.

Raised never having a formal singing lesson, Debbie Deb's two releases for Jam Packed Records in the 80's become instant classics on cross over radio.

The two tunes 'When I hear Music' and 'Lookout Weekend' are still remembered today for their freestylin 'talking/ singing' approach to the lyrics and both tracks took only a matter of hours to record.

Sadly she was never paid any of the royalties she was owned and later sued for reimbursement. Whilst the experience soured her passion for the industry, to this day the tunes still rock.

Kissy SellOut is a guy from London with some amazing skills. He's remixed Mark Ronson's Version cover with Daniel Merriweather of The Smiths' 'Stop Me if You Think That You've Heard This One Before'.

"Daniel is Ed McMahon to Mark Ronson's Johnny Carson on Mark's excellent weekly East Village Radio show, Authentic Shit." I love Wiki, even though Daniel never says shit on the show!

I loved the original.. then I thought Ronson & Merriweather did fantastic work on remaking it.. I can probably say that the remix is easily my favourite track at the moment. (48.44 on the 9/3/07 Podcast!). I've heard the Dirty South version. Its not as good.

The "cover song" is the new black it seems. It's always been a popular avenue for bands wishing to unleash their creativity (be it for good or bad) onto songs they've loved and lost it to.

There's the Klaxon's putting their own slightly perculiar take on JT's My Love as well as the cult 90's dance tune 'Not Over Yet' by Grace, the Arctic Monkey's version of Girls Alouds' Love Machine, plus numberous other covers by bands over the years that are doing the rounds.

It's not rocket science; take one classic tune, add a little bit of making it your own and try not to slaughter it in the process. (Hear that Klaxon's? Try not to slaughter 'My Love' in the process).
Anyhow, the first tune of this (I'll admit it, it's a somewhat dubious) classic by Stacey Q, comes courteousy of singer/ songwriter Brad Walsh. He's also a photographer-come-singer-come-writer-come-blogger-come-actuallyrathertalentedude.

The second is from the now (defunct?) Sydney group Rizzo & Pizzo. They were outlandish, outgoing, and daring. A bit like watching road kill unravel before your eyes, mesmerising, full of wonder & aghast all at the same time. (These are good things).

Sean Holland is part of the Coco Machete crew alongside Brennan Green, and Danny Wang.

Coco Machete Records began in 2002 as vehicle for one record that didnt seem to fit anywhere else. They're a mish mash label in that they put out tunes that go against the grain and are from a variety of genres - a very New York combination of sounds intended to make you sway, dance, rock and pop - House Music to Hip Hop, Punk Rock to Soul are the foundations on which Coco Machete is built.

Sean says about his style:

"I like to change the rhythm up, I don’t like it to be 4/4 all the time, I like a lot of hip-hop, I like a lot of reggae. As long as it’s going to work the crowd out and everybody has a good time I’ll play it".

This mix epitomises that quote. His mix style is deep, a little dirty & interspersed with the type of jackin acapella's that scream: NEW YORK CITY from the rooftops.

Santi White is long time songwriter (she also used to be a A&R Assistant at Epic Records in NYC), singer (for an indie punk band called Stiffed) and part of the duo of Santogold. She also features on Ronson's upcoming album, Versions, with the remake of The Jam's 'Pretty Green'. (You can find that too, if you cant wait till April 16)

Back to the Santogold stuff.. she did a guest spot on EVR at the start of Febuary and played a stash of demos (most you'll hear on the myspeezy).. a collab with FreQ Nasty and even a Switch and Sinden remix in there.. like, what haven't they remixed?

I didnt really feel that 'Late Registration' lived up as a second album.. but there is many an instance where that happens. He left the door open for me to be amazed.

So he releases a song called 'Better Than I've Ever Been'.. which is.. meh. But you know.. its produced by Rick Rubin and features KRS-One, so theres a bit of cred there. And then my all time favourite, Nike (as in THE shoes) releases their version for the Air Force 1 25th Anniversary and features the extra goodness of Nas, Rakim and bonus beats by DJ Premier.

Actually, here's a good joke my friend told me the other day... he saw two police walking past two drunken bums slouched in a doorway in Kings Cross. As the police approached, one of the bums yelled out "Happy New Year". Apparently the 'pigs'... I mean 'cops', didn't take it too well.

Either way though it explains a lot about Adelaide, the sleepy town come city where there's really not much to do (except kill people).

So keeping with the theme at hand; My office mate played this tune this morning and I wigged out. It's a classic late 70's tune from one of the early band adopters of the 'art-school' movement.

Talking Heads new wave/ punk / rock stylings won them many fans, but they're most remembered for their tune which gave such insight and ramblings into the mind of a psycho killer that it'll be remembered for decades; Psycho Killer.

They're called Gameboy/ Gamegirl and they're making some of the freshest electro / hyphy/ crunk I've heard in ages. Very catchy, groove ridden stuff that makes you shake yo ass from side to side whilst grinning and winking at your mate and pulling lame, but oh-so-cool party poses. If Kid Sister had a kid sister, Gameboy/ Gamegirl would be it.

There's clearly something in the party water in Melbourne at the moment, and whatever it is Gameboy/ Gamegirl have been guzzling it by the party party, dance dance bucket-load.

They're getting mad blog-love all over the place too - not half bad for a band that's not released a single tune, and has also recently only started gigging nationally.

Here in Oz this coming month as part of a national tour, Chk Chk Chk (!!!) are taking in a number of dates across the East Coast of Australia in support of their new album; Myth Takes.

This track, this track here, is quite easily one of the best, if not THE best, Chk Chk Chk song ever. Heart of Hearts is the first single from Myth Takes and it clearly demonstrates just how far they've come as a band since Louden Up Now.

I've had the pleasure of catching them live before in London a couple of years back and to this date it still remains in my Top 3 live Bands ever. They're absolutely captivating live - you'll dance, scream, sing & cheer like its the first time you've ever heard live music.

I recently had the pleasure of being lucky enough to hear the Cassius play 7 times in one week! They came equipped with very little - one record bag, an effects unit (and buckets of French charm) and yet every set sounded uniquely different to the last.

Whilst traveling light in terms of reportoire, they had filled the bag jam packed with Cassius classics; La Mouche, 1999, (instant classic) Toop Toop and this tune; Feeling for You - all of which received a raptorous response each time they were dropped.

They've now (sadly) returned to France where they've begun touring for their new Cassius (live) project; a project which should take Cassius to a whole new level as their catalogue of songs receives the live treatment. You can check out footage of them live on their MySpace page.

Additionally they've just launched an online remix opportunity. The plan is to release an album of the remixes that come into them, so if interested hit up www.myspace.com/cassiusworkshop to get cracking on a remix.

Good Vibrations was a great day out! There was the usual "festival" type problems, like sound cross-over between tents, long drink queues (but not for the toilets - hoorah!) and phone lines being backed up. Yes, I missed Snoop. I've posted some of my photos at Resident Advisor.

My ex-housemate, Mezla, messaged me on the weekend asking about a track that featured on an early mix CD from Sweetchilli by a guy called Jilbert. When I got hold of that CD, with tracks from Knee Deep, Brancaccio & Asher, Derrick Carter, Green Velvet.. it was like the best thing ever. Whatever happened to that guy?

I brought the CD into the office yesterday.. which prompted a mega reminicing moment with my roomie. Back to the days of "funky house" and girls wriggled their hips with arms in the air, prancing around their handbags on the floor and singing to the girly vocals. Disco synths, Latin / african drums, brass sections.. sometimes there was a live bongo drummer or saxaphone. With the likes of Shamus, Jools, Craig Obey, Matt Roberts and John Glover championing the sound in Sydney and Eric Morillo, Chris Lum, Joey Negro and KOT internationally and labels like Subliminal and Hed Kandi with popular worldwide mix CDs.

With recent house releases and remixes that I've stumbled on .. I've been wondering if I could be persuaded to go back to my house music roots? A track that I've dug up from waaaay back that definately rates up the top of my best tracks list:

Someone who'll be getting a bit of love in 2007 is Scotsman, Calvin Harris. The Mylo comparisons are easy to make; bedroom producer, originating from isolated area of Scotland, producing warm disco, house orientated tunes and widely tipped to be the next big thing straight outa Scotland.

Because I can't seem to track down an Mp3 of this tune, the first track from his hotly anticipated upcoming album, you'll just have to make do with the video from YouTube. "Acceptable in the 80's" is off "I Created Disco."

The annual Good Vibrations Festival is on in Sydney tomorrow... I haven't read up on how any of the other cities (Melb & Gold Coast.. Perth is next week) went but its probably the best festival, IMO. (Although theres the first Australian V Festival on next month!)

Theres reports of rain tomorrow.. but when has there been a Good Vibes that I've been to that hasn't rained? (Thats a photo of Al having to wring his socks out!)

Snoop Dogg was only at the Melb + GC shows.. but theres heaps of other great acts like London Elektricity (yes, I may have said once that Tony Coleman was attractive.. for an older guy. Haha), Jurassic 5, Cassius, Rahzel & JS-One, Nightmares on Wax, DJ Dan, Desyn Masiello (*swoon*), Cut Copy.. HEAPS. I'm probably looking forward to headliners, Beastie Boys the most, even though I've seen them in concert a couple of times already.

Jelly D is a writer/comedian from the Bay area and during a Lady Sov show, him and a group of friends start chanting "Battle Jelly Donut" to the point that Lady Sov gets so distracted that she screams at him, throws a cup of drink, spits on him and then gets him escorted out by security.

Theres another site - Help Me Get Random With Lady Sovereign where a guy raised $10,000 to 'party' with Lady Sov. Theres speculation that this site and the Jelly D incident are connected as the two guys know eachother. What.. just because they both live in San Francisco?

The final 12 were voted on by singers, songwriters, producers and other industry VIPs and the winner narrowed down by viewer voting via interweb and text message.

The final 3 came down to 3 girls - Africa Miranda, Brenda Radne and Robyn Troupe. They've been rehearsing with JT all week leading to the ceremony. Who will be the winner? Little Barrie is a 3-man band from somewhere in England, whose lead singer's name really is Barrie. I've been listening to their 2nd album, Stand Your Ground, quite a lot recently (as probably noted in my LastFM lists) because its gets me though the working day.

Partly produced by Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura .. its got the soul Breakestra-esque of Bailing Out, to the blues-infused Just Wanna Play.. this indie-slash-pop-slash-rock stuff is pretty infectious. The stand-out for me would probably be:

That sign out the front of the Metro on Wednesday night didnt seem to deter anyone. Spank Rock played a great DJ set with Pase energetically running around on stage and they closed the night with all 3 behind the decks. "All the white girls shake it till my dick turns racist!"

Whilst I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, especially if such bad news isn't completely yet validated, news is circling on the innaeweb that ghetto tech dj Disco D has passed away.

Reports have surfaced on the net, indicating that world renowned hip-hop, ghetto tech and booty DJ and producer Disco D has tragically committed suicide. Though no official statement has been released as yet, many memorial comments have been posted on his official MySpace page (www.myspace.com/gringolouco).

Disco D – who, at 26 years old, has achieved more in his 10 year career than many would expect to achieve in a lifetime – had revealed in the past that he struggles with bipolar disorder, and had also attempted suicide several times. In an interview with the Montreal Mirror in March, 2006, Disco D remarked; “I’m bipolar, I tried to commit suicide twice, like, I’m not scared of anything, know what I’m sayin’?”

Disco D, we salute you dude and we hope it isn't so!

Did anyone hear Diplo on FBi this afternoon? He did an interview with Alison Piotrowski where he was talking about going to Africa after his Aus tour to get some beats and try and get into Angola (theres no embassy here for him to get a visa!) to hit up some kuduro - championing it as the sound it wants to take into the future.

He also mentioned that the gig tomorrow at the Metro may possibly be a Spank Rock DJ set. Alison tried to allude that maybe a Spank Rock member was missing (as noted in my last post that someone might have missed his flight?).. and Diplo played all coy with "well, I'll have to call the hotel to check that.. but the DJ set will be something special". I'm ready to get my dance on anyhow.

Nelly Furtado's backflip into hip chick has been amazing. And for the most part she should be thanking Timbaland. He's given that girl her booty back by leading her back to her roots.

Meanwhile on the JT tip, Iusedtodancewithmydaddy wasn't showing much love for Sexy Back when it first came out. But it grew on me. Just like a snake in a trouser grows. *boom tish*

Now it's time for Timbaland's first solo release and he's called in the big guns, with Nelly Furtado & JT both featuring as guests.

Y'all know I’m a fan of Girl Talk. His party style mashup mayhem is pretty wild and he likes to get naked at live shows. He’s just recently released a new remix (which you will be able to find if you know the means) of:

Grizzly Bear – Knife

Grizzly Bear is an indie 4-man band from the US and this track is off their album, Yellow House, that was released late 2006 and is their second album. The album is considered, for want of better word, lo-fi (I liked reading the article in last weeks 3D world about how Hot Chip wrote ‘Over and Over’ as a stab at commentators for labeling their stuff “chilled out”). It was just a bit dragged out and whiney for my likings.. which is why Girl Talk’s remix is so kewl because it incorporates..

Clipse ft Slim Thug – Wamp Wamp (What It Do)

Whut it dew, indeed! The track is off Hell Hath No Fury (also released late last year). One of the most highly anticipated rap albums of last year as it had already been delayed for two years. I think The Capitane was a bit weirded out by me yelling “Whut it deeeewwww!!” down the phone to her the other night. Now you knows.

On a slight tangent, theres a brand new Thursday night in Sydney called Wamp Wamp (maybe the best club name out at the moment) at Bright'n Up Bar on Oxford Street. Last week was the launch night so I’m keen to check it out soon rather than later. Headed up by Kato and the RoShamBo dudes.. so you know the music policy be right. Brace yo’selves foo’!

(Miami) Bass in your face!

Today's appreciation lesson is brought to you by popstars who visit outer space.

Otherwise known as booty music the Miami bass musical style, which also includes other sub-styles of hip-hop, was popular in the US in the mid 80's to early 90's, however did not receive the same acclaim and popularity levels overseas. Today however, it is most closely aligned with the modern genres of Ghettotech and Booty House.

"Stylististically, it (Miami bass) is known for applying the Roland 808 sustained kick drum, slightly higher dance tempos, and occasionally sexually explicit lyrical content", says Wikipedia.

Artist wise, MC A.D.E and Luke Skywalker, of the crew 2 Live Crew, were the most well known and are traditionally seen as responsible for popularising the genre. However, as with most cultural movements it was also very much due to the support & promotion that the genre received in South Florida from DJs, Promoters & Clubs, that was most responsible for it's upswing in popularity.

M.C. A.D.E's name stands for Adrian Does Everything, and refers to the fact that he both rapped and produced his own records (which were signed to his father's record label). To this day he is most remembered for his song "Bass Rock Express" (1985), a track that today is still referred to by many as the first recognised Miami Bass record.
